Roger L. Brauer, Ph.D.

Background:
Roger L. Brauer, Ph.D., was born March 2, 1940 in Julesburg, Colorado, USA. His youth was spent in Ogden, Utah, and Symco and Green Bay, Wisconsin. He received his Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1972 and his Master of Science degree in 1967 from the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Bachelor of Arts degrees from Valparaiso University in 1965. He also studied at the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay and the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington.

Professional Experience:
Dr. Brauer was a practicing engineer, researcher, instructor, administrator and consultant during his professional career. Since 1996, he has served as the Executive Director of both the Board of Certified Safety Professionals and its affiliate organization, the Council on Certification of Health, Environmental and Safety Technologists, Savoy, Illinois. From 1990 to 1996 he served the Board as its first Technical Director. Between 1972 and 1990 he was a principal investigator and team leader at the U.S. Army, Construction Engineering Research Laboratory, Champaign, Illinois. For twenty years from 1978 to 1998 he taught safety engineering and ergonomics as an adjunct professor in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to completing his doctorate degree, he worked for the Boeing Company in Seattle, Washington, Borg-Warner Research Laboratory in Des Plaines, Illinois and Bell Aerosystems in Buffalo, New York. He has consulted in safety engineering, ergonomics and facilities planning.

Career Highlights:
Much of Dr. Brauer’s volunteer service has been with the American Society of Safety Engineers at the national level. He was the Vice President for Professional Development, Administrator of the Engineering Division, Chairman of the Academic Accreditation Council and served on several committees, including Finance, Society Restructuring, Restructuring Implementation, and Long Range Planning and Nominating. He represented the Society on the Board of Directors of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

Prior to becoming an employee of the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, he was a volunteer Director of the Board for seven years and served as Secretary/Treasurer, Vice President and President. He has also volunteered service to other organizations, his local village government and church.

He is a Professional Engineer in Illinois and Wisconsin, a Certified Safety Professional and a Certified Professional Ergonomist. He holds two patents.

He is the author of six books and numerous technical papers and publications. He has been a speaker an many local, national and international conferences and symposia. He is noted for his benchmark book, used by many in the profession: Safety and Health for Engineers.

Through his work at the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, he has been instrumental in helping to advance the value of and recognition for the Certified Safety Professional designation and safety and health professionalism in general. He led the Board in becoming the first certification in safety, health and environment to achieve national accreditation. More recently he guided the Board in becoming one of the first five certifications in any field to achieve international accreditation through a new ISO standard.

He received the Charles V. Culbertson volunteer service award twice in 1985 and 1995 from the American Society of Safety Engineers. He was the ASSE Divisions Safety Professional of the Year in 1989. In 1984 he was Researcher of the Year at the Construction Engineering Research Laboratory and received several performance award from that organization.

He is the son of the Reverend Harold (deceased) and Edna Brauer of Wausau, Wisconsin. He and his wife of 36 years, Char (Charlotte Shepherd), have two children, Michelle Pinciaro and David Brauer, and one grandson, Matthew Pinciaro. Dr. Brauer has resided in Tolono, Illinois since 1969.
