David Curley

Background:
David P. Curley was born in Richmond, Virginia, USA, in 1925. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1951.

Professional Experience:
Mr. Curley began his career in safety and health following Navy service in World War II and completion of his college education in 1951. Entering insurance as an occupation, he held positions in the broad field of safety engineering as a practitioner, supervisor, manager and executive manager for the Aetna Life and Casualty Company in Richmond, Virginia; Chicago, Illinois; and Hartford, Connecticut. He retired as assistant vice president in 1988. He is a Professional Engineer and Certified Safety Professional. At Aetna, he was responsible for Loss Control Services provided by more than 500 field staff. Aetna facilities enhanced through his efforts include a certified industrial hygiene laboratory, reference library, training center, and world class fire protection hydraulics laboratory.

Career Highlights:
In addition to his achievements for Aetna, Mr. Curley was active as a safety and health volunteer. He served as chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Safety Council, 1987-1990. His other activities for the Council included the position of officer and member of the Industrial Division Executive Committee, Board of Directors, vice president for Program and Planning, vice president for Industry and vice chairman of the Board of Directors. The Council presented him the prestigious "Distinguished Service to Safety Award" in 1984. He was a member of the Advisory Board of the Connecticut Safety Council. The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) in 1987 designated Mr. Curley a "Fellow," a distinction given to only a few. He joined ASSE in 1961 and served as chairman of the Admissions Committee and as assistant vice president of Professional Standards. He also held all officer positions of ASSE's Connecticut Valley Chapter and was vice president of ASSE's Region XI. Mr. Curley chaired the American Insurance Association Engineering & Safety Committee and the American Insurance Service Group. He also served on committees of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the National Fire Protection Association, and as a member of the Business Research Advisory Council to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. While assisting ANSI, Mr. Curley was a member of the U.S. Department of Labor task force that developed the Occupational Safety & Health Administration's injury recording and reporting system. He also advised Underwriters Laboratories, the National Association of Manufacturers, the Power Tool Institute and Insurance Institute of America. Mr. Curley's forte was loss control. Several of his programs became industry standards.
