Fred Manuele
Class of 1992

Background:
Fred A. Manuele was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia, USA, in 1924, the son of Louis and Mary Manuele. In 1945, he completed the U.S. Coast Guard requirements for licensing as a Marine Engineer. He was a registered Professional Engineer and a Certified Safety Professional.

Professional Experience:
Mr. Manuele served as a marine engineer for two years. He entered the safety profession in 1948, making safety and fire protection inspections in New York City. From 1951 to 1963, he was employed by the Springfield Insurance Companies, becoming assistant superintendent and superintendent for safety and fire protection. In 1963, he joined the Travelers Insurance Company as an assistant supervisor in an engineering group in New York City. In 1965, he became manager of the Engineering Department in Travelers' Chicago office. His tenure with Marsh & McLennan commenced in 1969 as manager of the Casualty Loss Prevention Department. He attained the rank of vice president in 1970. Upon the formation of M&M Protection Consultants in 1971, he became its midwest center manager. In 1976, he was named the national manager of M&M Protection Consultants. Soon thereafter, he was appointed senior vice president. He retired from Marsh & McLennan in 1971 as a managing director. Mr. Manuele was the president of Hazards, Limited and continued consulting on hazards management.

Career Highlights:
While responsible for M&M Protection Consultants, Mr. Manuele provided the leadership through which a group of safety and fire protection professionals became one of the outstanding senior-level hazards management consultancies in the world. One of his greatest contributions to safety, health, and environmental affairs is the many converts who have adopted the concept of maintaining a proper balance between the engineering and design aspects and the managerial aspects of hazards management. Mr. Manuele served in many leadership roles for the National Safety Council, the American Society of Safety Engineers, and the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. He was the first chairman of the Ergonomics Committee of the National Safety Council. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Industrial Division and a member of the Board of Directors of the Council. At the American Society of Engineers, he was a member of the Board of Directors for eight years. Subsequently, for seven years he was a director on the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, including a term as president in 1990. In 1984, Mr. Manuele received the Distinguished Service to Safety Award from the National Safety Council. He was awarded the honor of Fellow by the American Society of Safety Engineers in 1986. Mr. Manuele was involved in a number of research projects and authored numerous papers on hazards management. He authored the book, Essays on the Practice of Safety.
